Chapter Sixteen
Alex stood with his shoulder against the door jamb watching the woman he loved more than he had ever thought possible as she painted. They had been living in a blissful bubble this past week. After he had made love to her in this very room everything had seemed to change between them. Neither spoke of the future but they had fallen into a comfortable pattern.
They would spend their days working on leads from either Eidolon or Zenobi trying to track down Booth. He also spent hours trying to figure out who the snake was in the nest that was Eidolon. Later, they would go and spend an hour with Thomas and Delphine. The evenings were his favourite though, he would cook while she painted and then they would fall into bed together where he would make love to her.
He had only found a semblance of what he needed when he joined Eidolon. They were brothers, friends, colleagues. Each one seeking to ease a pain they lived with in some way. To make the world a safer place for innocents. He had done things he wasn’t proud of, killed people, tortured them, and each one had taken from him something that he thought he would never get back.
But as he watched Evelyn tilt her head from left to right as she studied the painting she was working on, he knew in his soul it was worth every life he had taken, every punch he had thrown. He would do it all again just to have this moment with her, but a moment was not what he wanted. He wanted it all! He had loved a young Evelyn with a boyish joy not knowing what life could dish out. Trusting that fate had given him his soulmate and they would live out their dreams.
A sneer lifted his lip at the naivete of that young boy. He hadn’t had a clue what life was. He wished in some ways he had never found out. He watched the sexy woman who was dressed in nothing but an old, white button-down shirt, her feet bare, her sinful legs naked to the eye, adding colour not only to the painting but to his bland life, and knew he loved her more now than that boy had ever been capable of.
He cherished every smile, every heated look, knowing that some asshole wanted to take it all away from him. He would not let that happen again. He would finish the bastards that wanted her dead. He would rip their fucking heads off, make them wish that they had never uttered her name and then he would give her his name legally, not just on a chain around her neck. On her finger, on her driver’s licence. He would marry her and never let her go.
“You gonna stand there all day and ogle me or are you going to come over here and tell me why you’re frowning like a grizzly bear?” Evelyn asked making a face that had his dark mood disappearing, leaving only her.
